How to make Bobotie

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a baking dish with butter.
  2. Chop 150 g of onion and mince 2 garlic cloves before starting your dish.
  3. In a pan, sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic in 30 g of butter over medium heat for around 5 minutes until they are soft.
  4. Add 500 g of ground beef to the pan and cook, breaking it apart, until it is browned all over, about 8 minutes.
  5. Soak 2 slices of bread in 250 ml of milk until soft, then remove and mix into the meat mixture.
  6. Add 10 g of curry powder, 30 g of apricot jam, 5 g of salt, and 5 g of pepper to the mixture and stir well.
  7. Transfer the meat mixture into the greased baking dish and spread it evenly.
  8. Beat 1 egg and mix it with the remaining apricot jam, then pour over the top of the meat mixture.
  9. Bake in the oven for 30-40 minutes until the top is golden brown and set, checking occasionally for doneness.
