Bint al-sahn recipe
Deliciously sweet and flaky Yemeni honey cake.
Ingredients
- 500 g all-purpose flour
- 10 g yeast
- 300 ml water
- 100 g butter
- 200 g honey
- 1 tsp ground cardamom
- 50 g sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 50 ml water
How to make Bint al-sahn
- Prepare 500 g of all-purpose flour, 10 g of yeast, 50 g of sugar, and 5 g of salt in a large mixing bowl.
- Gradually add 50 ml of water while kneading the dough for about 10 minutes until it feels smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rise in a warm area for 30 minutes, until it nearly doubles in size.
- Roll the risen dough into a large rectangle on a floured surface, then brush it generously with 100 g of melted butter.
- Fold the dough into layers as you brush with butter, making sure to coat each layer well.
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) while the dough rests after being layered.
- Transfer the layered dough to a baking dish and bake for 30 minutes until the top is golden brown and crisp.
- Once baked, remove from the oven, drizzle with 200 g of honey, and sprinkle 5 g of ground cardamom before serving.
